Globalhagen // An Eco-Friendly Hostel in Copenhagen

It’s no secret that travel has a big impact on the environment. High fossil fuel usage, resource-draining hotels and resorts, and convenient single-use products are some of the harsh realities of travel. As a frequent traveler, I’m always trying to make a conscious effort to reduce my footprint. I try to look for “green” accommodations and activities whenever I can. I’ve found that a lot of hotels will label themselves as “eco-hotels” because they provide organic shampoo or have a compost bin in their kitchen. That’s why I was so excited to find Globalhagen, and eco-friendly hostel in Copenhagen.

While looking for accommodation in Copenhagen, there were a lot of other factors we considered. If I’m staying in a hostel, it’s important that it has a kitchen, great customer service, and a social atmosphere. Does Globalhagen measure up? Here is my unbiased review of this eco-friendly hostel in Copenhagen.

Globalhagen is an eco-friendly hostel in Copenhagen that is truly committed to sustainable and green practices. All their furniture is made from recycled wood, they serve an organic breakfast and organic drinks in their bar, and they utilize energy-saving lightbulbs.

On top of that, Globalhagen is a non-profit and the proceeds go to the NGO Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke / Action Aid, which aims to promote equality and eradicate poverty in the world.

Globalhagen is the real deal – a sustainable and eco-friendly hostel in Copenhagen.

This is where Globalhagen has the leg up on its competition. Located right vibrant Nørrebro district in Copenhagen, it’s easy to reach all major landmarks on foot or on public transportation. The Nørrebro Station has a direct connection to Copenhagen Airport. We chose to walk everywhere all weekend because, well, we’re broke and everything was close by. We also felt incredibly safe walking around during the day and at night in this part of town.

Each room is uniquely decorated to represent some of the countries that Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke / Action Aid works in, such as Palestine, Myanmar, Zambia, and El Salvador. There are various sized dorms as well as private rooms. The rooms are well-designed and the furniture is built with recycled materials.

We stayed in one of their private rooms during our time at Globalhagen. We had a spacious bed, a desk, some shelves, and a large mirror. The room was basic but it included everything we needed for a relaxing stay in the city.

This eco-friendly hostel in Copenhagen features two kitchens, a cafe/bar, a common area for eating meals, and a cinema room with movies and board games. The rooms all have lockers for security and reading lights. Wifi is available in all areas of the building.

The bathrooms were spacious and well-equipped and the water in the showers got hot enough for me (and I like my water just about hot enough to burn a layer of skin off).

If I could rave about one aspect of Globalhagen, it would be the ambiance. I’m not into party hostels but I love hostels with good social atmospheres. The cafe at Globalhagen is open to the public day and night so there are always people hanging out. At night, it transforms into a relaxed bar atmosphere. Some nights there’s even live music and dancing.

Room for improvement

We had an incredible stay at Globalhagen but of course, no hostel is perfect. One thing to keep in mind is that you have to pay for bed linens, which is pretty uncommon at hostels. I’m assuming this is an eco-friendly practice but I would prefer if it were just built into the room price. This is a pretty minor shortcoming in my book but I think it’s important to note!

Would I recommend Globalhagen?

Absolutely. The ambiance, facilities, and sustainability practices make this hostel truly unique. The location is absolutely perfect for exploring all of the main sights in Copenhagen. If you’re planning a trip to Copenhagen, be sure to check out my other posts about the city as well:
